  • Common Rough Machining Methods for Forgings
Milling Machine Processing A machining method in which the forging rotates as the main motion and the milling cutter makes the feed motion. In the machining process of the forging factory's milling machine, the main motion is the rotational movement of the forging. It is especially suitable for processing wheel forgings, machine tool spindle forgings, etc. with rotating surfaces. The feed motion is the linear movement of the cutting tool.   Grinding Processing A method of processing the surface of a forging in a forging factory, where the grinding wheel rotates at a high angular velocity. Generally, the processing using a grinding wheel is called an external grinder. During the grinding process, the self - sharpening effect of the grinding wheel is unique compared to other cutting tools. It is different from the cutting edges of ordinary cutting tools.   Boring Processing A machining method in which the boring tool rotates as the main motion, and either the forging or the boring tool makes the feed motion. Boring processing is mainly carried out on milling - boring machines and boring machines. Boring is a further processing of drilling holes in forgings. Boring can expand the hole diameter, improve the precision, reduce the surface roughness, and can effectively correct the inclination of the original hole centerline. Boring can be divided into rough boring, semi - finish boring, and finish boring.   Planing Processing A machining method in which the planer tool and the forging perform a relative linear motion in the horizontal direction. Planing is a major method for planar processing. It is a commonly used processing method for planar processing in the single - piece and small - batch production of forgings. Common planer - type machine tools include shapers, double - housing planers, and slotting machines.   Milling Processing A machining method in which the milling cutter rotates as the main motion, and the forging and the milling cutter make the feed motion. Milling is a major method for planar processing. During milling, the rotation of the milling cutter is the main motion while the forging moves with the worktable.   Broaching Processing A method of processing the inner and outer surfaces of a forging by the linear motion of a broach under the action of tensile force. By using a multi - toothed broach, very thin metal layers are cut off from the workpiece one by one in sequence, enabling the surface to reach a high precision and allowing the forging to obtain a small surface roughness value.   Drilling Processing A method of processing holes in forgings in a forging factory, where the drilling tool and the forging move relatively and perform a radial feed motion. Drilling is a basic hole - processing method in forging processing.   Precisely because there are different processing methods, forgings of various shapes can be formed. Forging factories will use different processing methods according to the shapes required for manufacturing forgings. There are also various other methods for processing forgings. Although the processing principles of these methods are different, they still have many similarities. The most significant difference lies in the cutting motion mode during forging processing. However, due to the differences in the machine tools and cutting tools used in various processing methods, they each have their own technological characteristics and application scopes.
